Eithcs of Journalisn Distinguish News From Advertising and Shun Hybrids
Question:-
Distinguish news from advertising and shun hybrids that blur the lines
Answer:-
Woodward and Bernstein needed to get to the root of the Watergate issue and tell the truth but the problem was they were fair and honest in collecting information. It is true that Woodward, as a newer journalist, did not need to push individuals or nag them as much as Bernstein did, however Woodward also pushed the lawyer in the court room by following up with questions after he said “no comment” (Elliott & Schenck-Hamlin, 1979).
Another arguement would states that hownevr some their behaviors might have been questionable, Woodward and Bernstein were still doing a lot of research, fact checking one another and putting great efforts without taking any kind of shortcuts. Once they both identified that Watergate might have been more than just a break in for some cases, they began investigating. They were knowing that if what they had suspicion s about were true and they could identify it, they would be able to solve a big scandal and save many people from losing money and being lied to for even longer period of time.
I believe that Watergate had no significant meaning until this case, it has been discussed a lot about SPJ code of ethics and although it was not fully developed until after Watergate, these journalism ethics were still around when Bernstein and Woodward were investigating on the case.the first amendment was obviously in place as well during this particular time, which incorporated Freedom of Press and speech. In my point of view, the case was handled in an appropriate manner and I believe that their actions were justifiable because of the efforts they put in their work, collecting information and fact checking. They tried their level best to be honest and truthful to get down to some good results and solve the scandal.
- It can be stated that Watergate had a great impact upon journalism because it uncovered the field of journalism, it made individuals pay more attention to the government and what was published in newspapers, in addition to this Watergate was used for shaping acts later on down the road.
Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward were forced for making ethical decisions as journalists. Seeking the truth and reporting it, acting independently, minimising harm and being accountable, our the society of professional journalists code of ethics, raising debate on how well Bernstein and Woodward followed this outline. When they both attempted to find the truth, they used sources that wanted to remain anonymous and were very persistent when it came to these sources not wanting to speak. Woodward and Bernstein may have known their ways were not ethical, but because of the nature of the story as well as pressures they encountered, they were knowing it had to be done for publishing a successful story (Bernstein & Woodward, B1999).
I believed that Woodward as well as Bernstein did right in the film, as its was their ethical practices being a journalist, it is important for you to find out the truth. According to ethical codes of journalism it is the duty of a journalist to bring out the real issues or cases so that people can be saved from any kind of scandal or problem in the society. It has been determined from the act of Woodward and Bernstein that they were highly courageous and fair in their journalism and they were definitely right in their decisions.
